Canada-Mexico Declaration

Creation of an International Network of Monarch Butterfly Reserves

Recognizing the need to act jointly to conserve and protect the monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus L.) and its critical seasonal habitats, and

Recognizing the contribution this shared migratory species makes to the conservation of biodiversity in both nations, and

Recognizing the benefits that derive from the monarch butterfly's presence in critical concentration points along its migratory pathways, and,

Recognizing that other nations also continue to the present and continued well-being of this species:

Canada and Mexico hereby declare their intention to nominate sites within Canada and Mexico as part of the international network of monarch butterfly reserves.

Canada and Mexico will jointly promote and pursue, by whatever means possible and practical, the expansion of this international network of monarch butterfly reserves to include other nations which play host to this species.

Canada and Mexico herewith nominate the following sites as part of the international network of monarch butterfly reserves:

Canada:

Long Point National Wildlife Area, Ontario

Point Pelee National Park, Ontario

Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area, Ontario

Mexico

Reserva Especial de la Biosfera "Mariposa Monarca" wich includes five sanctuaries in the states of Michoacan and Mexico.

Finally Canada and Mexico will designate additional sites to this network.
